A Practical Guide to Choosing Your Pasadia Beach Day Pass or Hotel in Rosario Islands, Baru, or Tierra Bomba, Cartagena

The charm of Cartagena goes far beyond the postcard-perfect historic walled city that surrounds it to discover the beauty of its tropical  islands just a short speed boat ride off the coast.

The best of Colombia’s Caribbean coast is Rosario Islands.  There are private island resorts and public beaches for every style of play or stay in resort hotels.

Cartagena is one of the most distinct cities of Colombia with a culture, flair and vibe all its own.  There is a mix of colonial, Indigenous and Afro-Caribbean influence in the culture, architecture, neighborhoods, cuisine, music and dance. The awe inspiring natural beauty of Cartagena invites you to wonder its streets, stare at sunrises and sunsets over the ocean and immerse yourself the vibrant cultural programming, street art and dance scenes, and the rhythmic nightlife.

We recommend day two or three early in your trip that you whisk yourself off to one of the Rosario Islands, Tierra Bomba Island or Barú Island. Why? You would not want weather or the sea to cause you to miss out on tropical, white sand paradises. Also, the value of a day in paradise is choosing one resort that is best for you and gives you the freedom to choose what you want to do, not the tourist trap of Island Hopping Tours. The island hopping tours sell “seeing more, doing more and partying,” but you actually experience less, rushing island to island, and don’t get to relax in paradise–the true value of Rosario Islands. Instead hire a private boat with your family and friend group or buy a resort day pass that includes the speedboat ride and more. Get your adrenaline going and build up to the exciting experience to explore the natural beauty, relax or party in the islands of Barú, Rosario and Tierra Bomba. You will find that the resorts have plenty to see, do and even party atmospheres, if that’s what you want.

However, it’s not easy to decide which is the perfect island paradise to visit, since all of them are popular tourist spots with plenty to do and all trying to attract the most visitors to their shores.

But, don’t worry! We wouldn’t want you to return from your beach day feeling less than thrilled!

Here’s a guide for you to know the unique characteristics of each island and to help you find a place to stay that suits your interests, aligns with your travels style and ensures amazing experiences for you and your group.

Unwind on Barú's Pristine Shores

Barú entices with its undeniable beauty. When you visit you can sink your toes into its soft sand and feel the crystal clear and warm waves as they gently hit the beach. Playa Blanca is the island’s crown jewel and a haven for beachgoers and relaxation seekers. But for those who crave a touch of adventure there are kitesurfing lessons and horseback riding along the shore.

Here’s Barú at a glance:

Advantages:

  • Short 30-40 minute speed ride from Cartagena
  • Only island accessible by car in 1.5 hours from Cartagena
  • Breathtaking beaches, perfect for crystal blue waters nearest Cartagena
  • Wide variety of water sports like kitesurfing, snorkeling, and diving
  • A night excursion to the bioluminescent waters
  • Day excursions to nature reserves and the National Aviary (Aviario Nacional de Colombia)
  • More family-friendly day or overnight resort options
  • Private, luxurious resorts or villas perfect for overnight stays, no-hassle beach relaxing and play.

Disadvantages:

  • If traffic or rain and floods occur, your 1.5 hour drive could be 3 hours or your only option to get there and back is a moto taxi!
  • Public beach areas can be crowded, especially during peak season.
  • Vendors working the beach to sell any and everything and often at exorbitant prices.
  • Limited cultural and community experiences compared to other islands.
  • Most resorts cater to luxury travelers, with fewer budget-friendly options.
  • If you take public transport to return at night, there may be waits and it may be very crowded with all the resort workers and locals also trying to get back home in the city.

To truly enjoy Barú, we recommend you buy a day pass to one of the resorts to access their private properties away from the tourists and vendors on the beach.

Day pass resorts on Barú bundle your roundtrip speed boat transport, lunch, beach lounge beds or chairs, private facilities and lounge areas. When you go on your own, you will likely pay more for everything because it would be a-la-carte and subject to inflated prices. Therefore, if you choose to go on your own, take your food, snacks, drinks and supplies or rough it.

In January 2024, the new city administration in Cartagena instituted more beach police patrols and measures to curtail the negative aspects of tourism and overcharging tourists on Barú Island.

However, with a trusted travel advisor partner, you can find your best fit, mid-range beach clubs, and eco-friendly options that prioritize regenerative and responsible practices, not just going with what everyone is selling tourists.

Dive into the Rosario Islands

The Rosario Islands archipelago is a treasure trove of 27 pristine islands, each with its own story to tell.

Nature enthusiasts will be enthralled by the exotic wildlife that fills the islands, snorkel along its coral reef or do some kayaking through the thick mangroves.

If you want to relax on a warm beach, there are many where you can get away from the touristic scene and enjoy its tranquility.

But there is a lot more to explore and there is something to do for every member of your group.

Isla Grande, Isla Cholón and Isla Marina are only some of the best known islands, but if you do a little bit of research you’ll see which are the best to visit according to your plans.

Here are the Rosario Islands at a glance:

Advantages:

  • Diverse range of islands, catering to various interests.
  • A scenic 35-60 minute speed boat ride from Cartagena
  • Its National Park status offers excellent nature reserves and wildlife watching opportunities.
  • Opportunities for snorkeling and diving can be found on coral reefs across the islands.
  • Wider variety of private resorts mid-to-high end, from eco-lodges to hideaway boutique to luxury hotels and private villas.

Disadvantages:

  • Travel time to specific islands can vary depending on location, weather and sea conditions up to 60 minutes.
  • Some islands might have limited amenities or activities.
  • Requires more planning due to the variety of experiences and ambiances offered.
  • Some islands and resorts don’t have a beach to relax or the beach is very small when the high tide rolls in.
  • Limited, but available family-friendly options at some resorts
  • Some luxury island day passes or stays do not include roundtrip transport or meals

To choose your Rosario Islands experience, talk with your trusted travel advisor to find the best of Rosario Islands for you.

Remember, the true value of Rosario Islands is actually being still and in the moment to enjoy the pristine waters, impeccable beaches, seclusion and nature.

If you choose an Island Hopping package, you will not get to enjoy each unique island for much time and you may find that you prefer to stay in one place longer than another. Most Rosario Islands Hopping packages stay at the party island of Cholon the longest which is not for everyone. The blaring music from each speed boat drowns out all the music. The menu food, beverage and activity prices are 2-3 times inflated. You wade in the shallow island water that is warm and mirky from the congregation of people, speedboats and who knows what. You would be confined to the one area as it is not safe to go out further where the island drops off into the ocean, and speed boats come and go.

Overall, resorts in Rosario Islands offer a wider variety of amenities, catering to all travel styles, eco-lodges nestled amidst the rainforest provide an immersive experience, while boutique hotels on smaller islands offer intimacy and seclusion.

Look for resorts that champion cultural and ecological preservation and actively involve the local community in their operations and experiences.

Explore Tierra Bomba's Untamed Beauty

Tierra Bomba, the closest island to Cartagena, offers a glimpse into a more real life and rustic Caribbean experience.

The local town of Bocachica pulsates with local life, while secluded coves with crystal-clear waters are found in short walks to explore. Parts of Tierra Bomba are private property, but all the beaches are public beaches.

Tierra Bomba is ideal for those who are traveling on a budget or those who do not have time for a full-day out at the Rosario Islands, or those who do not like or require the beach, but prefer to enjoy a resort or swimming pool. This is Tierra Bomba at a glance:

Advantages:

  • Closer to Cartagena, offering a quick getaway 15 minutes by speedboat from El Laguito ($10.000 COP each way as of Spring 2024). To get to Bocachica on the other side, it is a 30 minute speedboat.
  • Lounge on the public beach away from the city without the requirement of a private club pass and ideal for families with kids (side across from Laguito, Cartagena)
  • Small boutique resorts, hotels and private villas each with a unique style and amenities mid to high end.
  • Adventure activities such as ATVs, kayaks, horseback riding on the beach
  • Exclusive evening beach dinners and special events due to the quick ease of access
  • Typically, more affordable resort day passes and accommodation options compared to other islands.

Disadvantages:

  • Limited resort options, primarily consisting of smaller, family-run or boutique establishments.
  • Fewer amenities and activities compared to other islands.
  • Parts of the beach are rocky shores, strong waves and less of a beach to swim or lounge, but nice to sit or walk a short distance.
  • Might not be ideal for those seeking luxurious resort accommodations.

Resorts on Tierra Bomba tend to be smaller, offering a more personal touch.

Look for resorts that partner with the local community to provide sustainable projects, employment and that showcase the island’s rich culinary traditions and provide opportunities to interact with local artisans.

What to Look for in a Resort?

Now, having found out about what each island of Cartagena has to offer, we’ve also prepared a useful checklist so that you’re able to choose the resort that’s best for you.

With each island having a distinct personality, the type of resort you choose will significantly impact your experience.

Here are some key factors to consider:

Resort Style:

  • Luxury Resorts: If you seek ultimate pampering experiences, Barú boasts several luxurious resorts. However, these may come at a premium price and might offer more a la carte dining and activity options.
  • Eco-Lodges: Found on Barú and throughout the Rosario Islands, eco-lodges prioritize sustainability and connection with nature. Expect rustic charm, locally-sourced cuisine, and opportunities to learn about conservation efforts.
  • Boutique Hotels and Villas: For a touch of intimacy and exclusivity, consider boutique hotels scattered across the Rosario Islands and Tierra Bomba. These often cater to a limited number of guests, offering personalized service and a focus on unique experiences.
  • Family-Run Establishments: Family-run guesthouses are available in Tierra Bomba and it’s easily accessible. The public beach makes it the most family-friendly option . These offer a budget-friendly option and a chance to experience a Colombian island.

Activities and Amenities:
Consider the activities you crave. Does your dream vacation involve deep sea diving, nature reserves, snorkeling excursions (look for resorts near coral reefs) or horseback riding adventures (common on Barú and Bocachica of Tierra Bomba)?

Amenities like on-site spas, fitness centers, or swimming pools can enhance your stay, but prioritize based on your needs.

Cultural Connection:

Try prioritizing genuine cultural connections. Look for resorts that partner with local communities, have non-profit programs, offer opportunities to learn about island traditions, or feature locally-sourced ingredients in their cuisine.

Choosing your Resort Day Pass:

  • What day of the week do you plan to visit? The options and vibe of the resort could change on weekends to a party scene.
  • Are you alone, a couple, a small or large group?
  • Do you want a DJ and party vibe or a relaxed and chill vibe?
  • Would you like beach access to swim or lounge on the ocean side or just a beach view?
  • Do you prefer a swimming pool?
  • Would you like a general pass or VIP pass options or is it a special occasion celebration?
  • What is your budget – luxury ($185 USD+ Rosario Islands or Barú) or mid-range ($80-100 USD Rosario Islands or Barú) or budget-friendly ($35-75 USD Tierra Bomba)?
