Immersive Cultural Tour

Highlights

Cartagena Colombia & Annual Independence Day Festival & Parade Immersive Cultural Tour (8 days)

Cartagena de Indias is a vibrant port city rich in history, dating back to the pre-Columbian era. The city's historic center, Cuidad Amurallada, or Walled City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a blend of Spanish, African, and indigenous cultures that can be seen in its architecture, cuisine, traditions, and its people. A top tourism destination worldwide, Cartagena is attractive for its colonial architecture, nightlife, Rosario Islands just off the coast, and traditional and internationally-inspired cuisine. But very few tourists come to know, understand, and experience real Cartagena-- the true character of its people and the depths of its history and significance in modern-day Cartagena, Colombia and the Americas. On this immersive cultural tour, we invite you be charmed by the true beauty and treasure of Cartagena.

Cartagena’s strategic location on the northern Caribbean coast of South America, made it a crucial port for the Spanish colonial empire. It was a key point of departure for the transportation of gold, silver, and other valuable commodities that were extracted from the mines in Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia. Cartagena was also a major center for the slave trade, with hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans passing through the city's ports. The city was heavily fortified with walls, cannons, and other defensive structures to protect its valuable assets from attacks by foreign powers and pirates.

We will touch all sides of the walled city and beyond to learn the long and complex history and connections of Getsemaní neighborhood and street mural art district, Bazurto Market and the Caribe indigenous groups. It is here where you will come to appreciate the fullness of life in Cartagena.

The roots of Cartagena are intertwined with Afro-Colombian history and culture through music, dance, food, and art. We will tour San Basilio de Palenque, Colombia, a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This small Afro-Colombian community is commemorated as the first free town of the Americas, established by Benkos Biohó, a royal leader of Guinea Bissau, and other maroons in the 1600s. We will tour the village community learn the deeper history and observe village life that still preserves its African ancestor’s heritage though their creole language, customs, medicinal practices, rhythmic cumbia and champeta music, traditional African hair-braiding techniques that have been passed down through generations, and world-renowned cuisine.

We will enjoy the most festive time of year in Cartagena at the Annual Independence Day parade on November 11 and festivities that start months before and continue days after Independence Day! Cartagena is the first city in Colombia to declare independence from Spain in 1811 and the commemoration is grand! We will see beauty queens from all around Colombia competing for the crown, street parties, cultural performances, and the heritage festival parading parallel to the Caribbean ocean and Walled City as its backdrop.

When it’s time to relax, we will indulge in the beautiful Rosario Islands, an archipelago of coral reefs and pristine beaches just off the coast of Cartagena. Snorkel in crystal-clear waters, soak up the sun on the white-sand beaches, and savor the fresh seafood caught daily by local fishermen.

Experience the unique ambiance of Cartagena with its well-preserved, colorful colonial architecture, lively street performers, and hospitality. Whether strolling along the city walls at sunset, sipping coffee in a charming café, dancing the night away to salsa, the beats of champeta music, or international dance clubs, Cartagena is a city that will captivate your senses and leave you with unforgettable memories.

Connect your tour to our 8-day Medellin Colombia Immersive Cultural Tour or our 4-day immersive cultural tour to indigenous communities in the jungle of Tayrona National Park, Palomino and Santa Marta and save $150 off your Cartagena tour!

Bernell King

"After only one day in Cartagena, I felt an inexplicable connection and was determined to return to explore why. I did! And a one month trip was spontaneously extended to a three month trip of living local life with locals. Upon arrival, I knew not one person in Cartagena. By the time I left, I had my own community of friends and colleagues and even appeared on TV in a cultural dance performance in the Annual Independence Day Parade. My experience remains inexplicable and indelible!"

Cartagena and Cartageneros or Costeños, as the people are known, are very passionate, friendly, and proud of their heritage. Cartagena and its people are often misunderstood and overlooked by the veneer and unrelenting environment of tourism from on all fronts. But if you approach Cartagena differently, you will find and connect with the heart of the people, and the richness of its very distinct culture and heritage significant to all of Latin America & the Americas. I am passionate about traveling like a local with locals. My life and relationships have been deeply enriched by over 23 years of experience in international business, coaching, consulting and training of expatriates, executives, families and children from around the world and travel to explore world cultures. I have traveled to 15 countries, over 230 cities and I speak 3 global languages: English, Japanese and Spanish. I hold the travel industry certifications of: American Society of Travel Advisors Verified Travel Advisor (ASTA VTA), Airlines Reporting Corporation Verified Travel Consultant (ARC VTC), Certified Special Needs & Mobility Travel Advocate, Destination Specialist for various countries.
