Highlights

Meet Me In™ Querétaro, México Cultural Tour (Choose up to 8 days)

Querétaro (officially Santiago de Querétaro) is a jewel in the geographic and historic center of México highlands known for a rich mix of contemporary culture, cultural diversity, a wine and cheese region of haciendas, colonial UNESCO World Heritage sites, the natural wonder of Sierra Gorda ecological region, six Magic Towns (Pueblos Mágicos) with distinct history, character, charm and gastronomy, and more of it all. A city with a population of 1.05 million, Querétaro boasts one of the highest qualities of life and safest cities in México. While foreign-direct investment in Querétaro is influencing increasing attention for international tourism and expatriates, Querétaro has maintained a very "Mexican-feel." It's proud heritage and role in México's independence from Spain and being the location for the signing of all of México's constitutions, is well-preserved and on display in the historic center. We will observe the details of this unusual, old colonial town that has retained the geometric Spanish street plan side-by-side with the twisting alleys of the Indian quarters of the Otomi, the Taraso and the Chichimeca indigenous people who lived together with the Spanish in Querétaro. Querétaro is adorned with ornate civil and religious Baroque monuments and architecture from its golden age in the 17th and 18th century. There are a diversity of experiences within a close distance which makes it ideal for a Meet Me In Tour. Meet Me In Tours allow you to meet me, Bernell King, your cultural travel coach & concierge in Querétaro and to build your itinerary and budget any time between these dates! Take a look at the options below, but you are not limited to these cultural tour experiences and you can choose the maximum amount of rest or go with the flow. Here are some full-day experiences and tours curated by World Awaits that you can choose to add to your itinerary. This list is not complete—your concierge will work with you to find and build your itinerary with the experiences you desire:

Querétaro´s Metropolitan Area Tour (7 hours approx.; Vehicular and Pedestrian)($150)
Includes: Certified Tour Guide (Bilingual English-speaking), Transportation, and bottled water
You will venture outside the historic center to noteworthy sites of power, influence and victory of Mexican over colonial dominance and Pre-hispanic México. National Park Cerro de las Campanas (Hill of the Bells) is a historic hill and national park where Emperor Maximilian I and his two México generals were executed, definitively ending the Second Mexican Empire and French intervention in México. The site features statues, monuments, a museum and a chapel. Thirty-minutes outside of Querétaro, we’ll encounter Archaeological Zone of “El Pueblito” in the municipality of Corregidora where the influence and commercial prowess of the Teotihuacan people between 400 B.C. and 600 AD expanded from present-day México state to build a great pyramid at El Cerrito which functioned as a regional political and religious center of regional importance from 400 to 1500 AD.

The Route of Independence (Ruta de la Independencia) (10 hours approx.; Vehicular and Pedestrian)($150)
Includes: Certified Tour Guide (Bilingual English-speaking), Transportation and bottle water
You will follow the route of the “Messenger of Independence” footsteps, Ignacio Pérez, who leaves Querétaro for Guanajuato to warn that the Peninsular Spaniards have discovered the Mexican conspiracy to be autonomous and separated from Spain. Just as the conquest in Mesoamerica was made of indigenous people, led by a few Spaniards, against other indigenous people, independence will be a social and armed movement of Criollos (Spaniards born in America), against European Spaniards, to obtain property and liberty of their own lands. You will learn about the strategic location of Querétaro and its role in this social, economic and even religious movement that gained strength inside homes, temples and in squares. We will start in Querétaro and follow the famed Route of Independence to key historical towns and UNESCO World Heritage sites in the neighboring state of Guanajuato–Dolores Hidalgo, Atotonilco, and San Miguel de Allende.

Magic Towns (Pueblos Magicós) of Querétaro´s Semi-desert Area (10 hours approx.; Vehicular and Pedestrian)($150)
Includes: Certified Tour Guide (Bilingual English-speaking), Transportation, Admission, and bottle water
In the semi-desert zone are three of Querétaro’s Magic Towns of Amealco, Tequisquiapan and Bernal. You’ll discover the origins of the “art” and the culture that influenced the social, mystical and religious society of México. We’ll learn of the rituals and role of nature of the indigenous Nahuatl, Chichimeca and Otomí people and their cosmogony that represents present day Mexican culture and beliefs.

Pueblo Magicó Amealco de Bonfil is one of the oldest towns in the state of Querétaro. Amealco is adored for its color, tradition, landscape of gentle hills, forests and pastures and is emblematic for pulque (or octli, a fermented alcoholic beverage of the maguey plant) and colorful cloth María dolls, the handicraft symbol of Querétaro.

Pueblo Magicó Tequisquiapan is considered the gate to the Nature Reserve Sierra Gorda. Tequisquiapan is special for its mineral baths, well-preserved Spanish colonial buildings on cobblestone streets, wine and cheese, and as the historical geographic center of México.

Pueblo Magicó San Sebastian de Bernal originated with and was protected by the indigenous Chichimeca as a military fort. The Chichimeca constantly defended their land from new settlers, adventurers, Spanish soldiers and other indigenous people who dared to cross their borders. From every point of view is Peña de Bernal, the third largest monolith in the world, and is considered magical and powerful by the people who live here, with healing energy and a cause of the longevity in its inhabitants.

Wine, Cheese and the Magic of San Sebastián de Bernal (10 hours approx.; Vehicular and Pedestrian)($150)
Includes: Certified Tour Guide (Bilingual English-speaking), Transportation, Admission, and bottle water
In Querétaro’s semi-desert region we’ll experience Azteca Vineyards, Bocanegra Cheese Factory, and Magic Town of San Sebastián de Bernal. Clerics and civilians from Spain brought with them the products of their daily life—wine and cheese—and begin to produce them in American lands since the 16th century. Viticulture, the cultivation of grapes, and manufacturing of American wine, was mainly for sacraments, but also as a regular drink. This disturbed European winemakers, created market problems, and led to a royal order prohibiting viticulture in America in the middle of the 18th century. This gives way for a culture of cheese. We’ll learn how the ancestral product of cheese and the Muslim and Catholic syncretism gives rise to the massive use of cheese in customs in Europe and finally in America. Bocanegra Cheese Factory matures almost 300 varieties of cheese 20 feet below ground level.

Aztec Vineyards
From raising horses used for the “Charrerias,” traditional Mexican horseback riding, rodeos and equestrian activities with the Aztec horse, Aztec Vineyards evolved into wine making. Six varieties of wine are made here: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Syrah and Tempranillo.
We will get to know the fermentation process and the entire hacienda, the charro “lienzo” (stadium) where traditional charro competitions are held, the vineyard and the spectacular facilities. We will not only enjoy the exquisite wines, but learn how to drink and better enjoy wine, the ages and qualities and process of converting the grape elixir into a delightful potion called wine.

Bernell King

"Querétaro is a big city yet with a quaint, Mexican town feel. I loved wandering through the beautiful, historical streets and road trips to vineyards in the semi-desert and beautiful Pueblos Magicós. I felt safe traveling solo and walking at night in the central historic district to explore restaurants where locals eat."

I love Mexico and it continues to wow me with the uniqueness, culture and warm people in every state I've explored! I'm grateful for my Mexican friends sharing their homes, families, way of life with me and of course, gastronomy with me! I am passionate about traveling like a local with locals. My life and relationships have been deeply enriched by over 23 years of experience in international business, coaching, consulting and training of expatriates, executives, families and children from around the world and travel to explore world cultures. I have traveled to 15 countries, over 200 cities and I speak 3 global languages: English, Japanese and Spanish.
